We are sad to announce the passing of Charles Lee Courter, who peacefully left us on March 31, 2025, just shy of his 85th birthday. Born on April 28, 1940, in Sand Springs, OK, Charles' life was distinguished by his fun loving personality, orneriness, and the impact he had on those around him.
Charles had many interests but his heart was always with his family and friends. He owned and operated a DX station at 10th and Adams Road in Sand Springs for 13 years with his brother-in-law, Charles Divine. Together they created a place where locals could not only fill their tanks but also share stories and laughter. After giving up the station, Charles worked for Atlantic Richfield as a plant supervisor for 20 years where he held the trust, respect and friendship of the men he worked with. Many of whom he stayed friends with for the rest of his life. He was married to Judy, his loving wife, for 62 years. They would have been married for 63 years come May 18th.
Charles loved the outdoors and loved people. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and 4-wheeling. He spent several months a year in Colorado riding trails through the mountains and when his health would no longer allow that, he spent many afternoons at the lake with friends or fishing the pond close to his home. He also served as a door greeter at Olivet Baptist Church for many years, where he always had a smile, joke, or story for the folks he greeted.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their daughter, Shannon Renae Combs and her husband, Mark, grandson, Britton Lee Combs, sister, Patricia Kay Cowen, bonus son, Chris Sanders, and brother by another mother, Mike Waresback.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.T. and Freddie Courter, his sister, Sylvia Divine, and his brother, Richard Courter.
Charles Courter never met a stranger and Judy tells stories of how he made friends everywhere he went. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him. We invite you to share your memories and upload photos of Charles to his memorial page, keeping his spirit alive in our hearts.
Services will be held at Olivet Baptist Church, 155 N 54th West Ave., Tulsa, OK on April 12th, 2025 at 11:00am.
