David House

–

Sand Springs, Oklahoma

David Edward House was born January 25, 1940 in Muskogee, OK to Lawrence House and Marie (Edwards) House. He passed away on September 23, 2022 at the age of 82 in Tulsa. He lived in Porum OK then briefly lived in Sand Springs before moving back to Porum. As a small child, he would often sit on the front steps of the residence waiting for his father to come home from the coal mines. Eight days before David turned 5 in 1945, his parents welcomed his baby sister, Doris, into the home, although David wasn't quite so thrilled with the little bundle of joy at the time.
In 1946, the family moved to Atwater, CA. David and the family would listen to baseball games on the radio and his love of the New York Yankees began during this time. He and his sister would also play baseball in an empty lot with the neighborhood kids and the family would often attend local baseball games. David played on the baseball team when he attended Livingston High School in CA. David's love of art began as a child and he loved to draw pictures. David's handwriting was also very artistic. He was told he didn't just write his letters, he drew them. As a teenager in California, David worked with his grandfather in irrigation and worked in a peach packing shed.
The family moved back to Oklahoma in 1957 and lived in Sand Springs. David attended Sand Springs High School then began working at Commander Mills (the Cotton Mill). David began dating and fell in love with Galatha McComb. They married April 4, 1960 and made their home in Sand Springs. In November 1961, David's youngest sister, Deanna, was born who was quite a surprise to the family at the time since David was 21 and their sister Doris was 16. In 1962, David joined the Air Force and was part of the Military Air Police. He was at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas then Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. While in South Dakota, he and Galatha lived through some brutal winter weather but were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the area. David continued drawing and began drawing cartoons and had one published in the Rapid City newspaper. He also did some special art projects for the Air Force.
After David's military service ended in 1965, he and Galatha moved back to Oklahoma. They lived in Sand Springs then moved to Tulsa. David began working for CE Natco as a welder and was there for 18 years. He worked for a while at Hissom Memorial Center. David then worked as a welder at Ameron for 12 years.
In 1971, David and Galatha adopted their only child, Gene House. Gene was probably a bit spoiled and always received the latest toys. When Gene began playing baseball as a child, David became a coach for the team. David may not have outwardly expressed his emotions, but Gene always knew that his Dad loved and cared for him.
David continued his creative talent by building shelves, coffee tables and making knives. He gave many of his creations to family members. David's passion for art continued as he still loved drawing pictures through the end of his life. David's eye for detail greatly helped him in his career as a welder. If he ever hung up a shelf or picture on the wall, you always knew it would be level and centered. It may take a while with all of the measuring he did but he wanted to make sure it was completed to his standards.
David also loved music, especially Johnny Cash and blues music. For many years, David and Galatha's highlight of the year was attending the Tulsa State Fair. They also loved camping and fishing when they were younger and going rock hunting.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Marie. He is survived by his wife Galatha and his son, Gene House and daughter-in-law Kristen all of Tulsa, his grandsons Justin House and wife Kayla, and Joshua House as well as his great granddaughters Makenzie and Zoey. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Woodruff of Owasso and his sister, Deanna House of Sand Springs as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. A special thanks goes out to his niece, Tina, for the tremendous help she has provided to David and Galatha during their recent health issues.
Funeral services will be held at Dillon Funeral Services in the chapel at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 in Sand Springs. Internment will follow at Woodland Cemetery. There will be a family visitation on Monday, September 26, 2022 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Condolences may be shared at www.dilloncares.com.
