Don Comstock

–

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Don Joseph Comstock, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on March 16, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 73, after fighting metastatic lung cancer for 6 years. Don was a very family and community conscious person. He was very committed to caring for his large family. He was also deeply committed to his friends, from childhood friends, to those he met through his work as a union pipefitter, to friends from his volunteer efforts in the Tulsa and Sand Springs communities. His
intense curiosity kept him learning new things about his trade and about the people around him. He very much loved road trips and to explore new places. Especially later in his life, he devoured books about history, politics, religion, and different cultures.

Don was born on April 29, 1950, in McCook, Nebraska, to the late William and Pauline (Pat) Comstock. Don graduated from Bishop Kelley High School in 1968. He attended the University of Tulsa briefly before joining the Army and deploying to Vietnam in 1969. He served until 1972, when he was honorably discharged for medical reasons. Upon his return he trained as a union pipefitter and continued in the trade until his retirement. After retirement, he took on numerous self-appointed projects, cleaning up vegetation and debris from roads, sidewalks, and empty lots. When he saw that his neighbors needed help with removing larger debris, he began organizing clean up days with assistance from Tulsa County. He continued volunteering his time until his health prevented it.

Don is survived by Diane Comstock and their three children, Cassandra (Michael) Burns, Matthew (Pamela) Comstock, and Benjamin (Emily Rose) Comstock. Don also had six wonderful grandchildren; Gwydion, Jaelee, Gavin, Isabel, Leo, and Andres. Don was a devoted brother and is survived by his siblings, Kathryn (John) Waterfield, Jon (Stephanie) Comstock, Jo Ann Bly, Trish (Don) Gilbert, Nancy Comstock, and Mary Anne (Wade) Ackley. He was predeceased by his parents as well as siblings Dan Comstock, Stanzi Comstock, Lee Comstock, and Peggy Gamboa.

In addition to his family, Don touched the lives of countless others with his compassion, generosity, and willingness to take on difficult tasks. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial gathering will be held at Case Community Center in Sand Springs, Oklahoma on April 7, 2024 from 2-4:30pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Don’s memory to Tulsa Day Center:
