James Coy "JC" Gaines Jr. Obituary (1941 - 2026)

James Coy “JC” Gaines- Some lives announce themselves loudly. Others are measured in quieter things; in early mornings, steady hands, promises kept, and the number of people who know exactly who to call when something needs to be fixed. James Coy “JC” Gaines, Jr. was one of those people. Born March 27, 1941, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, to James Coy Gaines, Sr. and Geneva Henry, JC learned early that life rewards those willing to work, lead, and carry more than their share. At sixteen years old, he left high school and joined the United States Navy. Serving with Fighter Squadron ONE FIVE ONE, JC quickly earned a reputation not simply for just doing his job—but for exceeding every expectation placed before him. His Commanding Officer awarded him a Letter of Commendation recognizing his exceptional performance and leadership as both an officer and sailor, entrusting him with responsibilities usually reserved for men with far more years of service. Those around him saw something unmistakable: discipline, humility, and a rare ability to make difficult things seem simple. Following his decorated career, he was honorably discharged on September 13, 1964. But his greatest legacy was never built in uniform. On June 15, 1962, JC married Patsy Seratte. Together, over sixty-four years, they built something stronger than business, titles, or accomplishments—they built a home. That home welcomed their sons, James Mitchell in 1964 and Stephen Michael in 1965, and became a place where family came first; hard work mattered, and help was never more than a phone call away. Professionally, JC became a craftsman in every sense of the word. From working alongside his Uncle Dan, to years with Dick Slankard Inc, to creating Tulsa Mechanical Inc. and later Gaines Plumbing and Piping Inc., he earned respect through consistency and integrity. As a proud member of Local 205 Plumbers and Pipefitters, he received a fifty-year service pin—not simply marking time but marking a lifetime of showing up. But people rarely remember someone only for what they built. They remember how they made people feel. And JC became everyone’s person. Need advice? ... Call JC. Need something repaired?... Call JC. Need someone who simply shows up? ... Call JC! He rarely hesitated. His influence stretched far beyond work. He helped develop Sand Springs’ first youth wrestling program. He coached youth football and led baseball teams to win the State Championship. A member of the First Assembly of God, he especially loved serving as a Sunday school teacher—sharing not only lessons of faith, but encouragement, guidance, and time with others. He competed with the Sand Springs Powerlifting team, took part in the Round-Up Club, and became the first owner and operator of a fitness center in Sand Springs — J’s Fitness Center. Every role reflected the same belief: If something mattered… give it your full effort. JC is survived by his wife, Patsy; sons Mitch, his wife Tracy; and Mike, his wife Lisa; grandchildren Dylan, Evan, and Seth; his spouse Anthony; great-granddaughter Vyolette; sisters Donna and Nancy; and Aunt Louise. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Halston. And though the years move forward—as they always do—the measure of a life is not how long it lasted. It is found in the people who carry your lessons. The calls that still feel unfinished. The stories are still being told. And the quiet certainty that someone like JC leaves a place better than he found it. He will be forever missed. And forever remembered.
