Sand Springs, Oklahoma
Steven Dale McGehee was born March 6, 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Everette and Melba (Riddle) McGehee. As the oldest of three children, Steven grew up as a loving and protective brother to his two little sisters, Becky and Leesa. He died tragically on Monday, September 7, 2026, doing what he loved.
Steven married the love of his life, Carolyn Mills, on May 8, 1970, and just three days later, he left for boot camp. They began their married life together in Germany, where they lived for six months. During that time, he was recommended for an E5 sergeant promotion, and received it despite his relatively short amount of service time. He was then reassigned to serve in Vietnam where he served as a heavy equipment operator while finishing out his tour.
Following his military service overseas, Sergeant McGehee transferred to the United States Air Force Reserve, where he fulfilled the role of Air Police on the Air Guard Patrol, until being honorably discharged on January 17th 1972.
Professionally, Steve spent many years as a dedicated safety man. He worked as a firefighter for the City of Sand Springs before joining the fire department at Sun Oil Refinery where he specialized in both fire and safety. Known for his keen eye, unwavering safety standards and steady leadership, Steven earned the trust and respect of every crew he worked with. Before retiring, he joined Oiland Safety where he worked on refinery and plant turnarounds that allowed him to travel around the United States and nurture his love of adventure until 2018.
