Sand Springs, Oklahoma
Wilma "Jean" Martin Wallace went to be with our Lord and Savior on March 24, 2023.
She was born on June 15, 1935 to Ollie Martin and Lorine (Hillsberry) Martin in Sand Springs, OK. She raised her family and lived in Sand Springs her entire life.
Jean was 7 years old, when her mother became afflicted with Rheumatoid Arthritis which severely limited her ability to care for her children, Jean naturally became the caregiver for her siblings as her father worked long hours. Jean began her working career at a young age in order to help support her siblings. At age 20, she worked at Mac's Hamburger Stand on 'the line' as a carhop where she met the love of her life, Ted Wallace. Not long after, they were married. Ted and Jean had two daughters: Stephanie Jean (Wallace) Thomas of Skiatook, OK, and Sharolyn Jan (Wallace) Bowman of Hominy, OK, and one son Michael "Mike" Schexnider of Sand Springs, OK. Stephanie and Don Thomas gave Jean and Ted 3 granddaughters: Kristen Kylene (Thomas) Hawkins, Heather Lynn (Thomas) Sullivan, and Brandi Dawn (Thomas) Hulsey. Mike & Rhonda Schexnider gave Ted and Jean 5 grandchildren: Amanda Rae (Schexnider) Seitz, Aaron Joshua Schexinider, Mikella Rose (Schexinider) Selsor, Jacob Jon Schexnider, and Lacey Lynn (Schexnider) Davis. The grandchildren gave Ted & Jean 21 great grandchildren.
She worked at several places in her 87 years, including: Commander Mills as a weaver, Braums as a manager, McDonald's as a manger, Beverly Photography Studio as a photographer, Thomas Accounting & Billing as a data entry clerk, Hissom Memorial Center as a clothing buyer, and she retired from DHS of Oklahoma as a receptionist after many years.
Jean had a passion for helping and taking care of people, especially children. Ted and Jean opened their home to provide outdoor activities in a safe, loving, family environment for children residing at Sand Springs Children's Home. At the age of 14, after 7 years of going to the Wallace home for these activities, Mike Schexnider was welcomed into their family home. Also, Jean fostered and welcomed into her loving home Ponie Sims.
Jean had many hobbies. Her green thumb was apparent by her beautifully landscaped yard which she shared with her family and friends while hosting cookout's. Some other hobbies included sewing, diamond dotting, and baking. She made several tiered wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and cakes for her "Friday Night Gang". She would put her own spin on recipes by adding unique ingredients. She enjoyed traveling to her kids, grandkids and great grandkids sporting events. Later in life, Jean discovered her love of animals when she was given a puppy. Ted affectionately named him "Buddy" as he became her companion especially after Teds passing.
Jean is preceded in death by her mother and father; sister Geraldine Portilloz; brother Randall Martin; and her husband Ted. Jean is survived by her brother Hershel "Jerry" Martin and his wife Jean; her sister-in-law Gerra Martin; Ted and Jean's three children; 8 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren.
